- Russian for hippopotamus. In the biblical book Job, there is also a description of a huge monster called Behemoth.
- In M&M, he is described as “black, huge, as a hippopatamus” (page 203). He plays a role of an evil jester, and executes violent punishments (ie: beheading). The prototype for Behemoth was supposedly based off of Bulgakov's own grey cat, Flyushka.
