The Lord of the Flies imagery

  • Though The Master and Margarita was published before The Lord of the Flies, there is quite a bit of The Lord of the Flies imagery in the novel
  • When Yeshua is being hung on the cross in “The Execution”, his face is described as being completely covered by black flies, “so that [his] face had disappeared under the black, stirring mask” (page 193). This is quite similar to the “pighead” in The Lord of the Flies, which is described as being enveloped in flies.
  • In Christianity, Beelzebub is considered “The Lord of the Flies” and a prince of the demons
  • Woland is also described as wearing “a gold chain with a beetle artfully carved of dark stone” (page 271). This is most likely a scarab beetle, which is a symbol of Beelzebub/The Lord of the Flies (Satan).
